The diyYOUTH Art Program builds academic skills while exploring self expression and creativity. Local artists teach and mentor students in various artistic mediums guiding them in the production and promotion of art. This program uses art as a vehicle for young people to explore and learn skills they need for academic success and ultimately to develop life and career skills.
At the heart of this project are young people, particularly teenagers, interested in exploring art, fashion design, animation, graphic design, the diy movement, marketing, advertising, and business. diy provides an avenue for exploring creative drive along with learning about the possibility of vocation through art. Our ultimate goal is for young people to operate an art studio and gallery, and organize art shows exhibiting their work in the Austin community.
We are currently providing afterschool programming at Martin Middle School, Eastside High School and the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. Program staff and students work hand in hand to identify the artistic mediums and techniques to be studied each semester. A youth development approach ensures shared control and responsibility for the program while keeping the learning fresh and relevant to participants. The diyYOUTH Art Program purposefully includes practical, how-to information about the "entrepreneurial" side of art such as organizing art events, creating logos and identifying art venues to sell their work. In addition, all revenue from art sales goes directly to each student artist.
Annually we provide a summer art camp, typically in July, at SPACE12 in Austin. Scholarships are available.
