"The Strength of Youth. The Power of Community"
August 18-21, 2009
Doubletree Hotel - Austin, TX
The 26th annual conference sponsored by TNOYS is designed to promote "leading edge" thinking and program development, while building skills, competencies, and connections among youth service providers. The conference offers a statewide forum for networking, sharing solutions to local problems, and discussing critical issues facing Texas' youth and families and the programs and agencies that serve them.
This year's theme "The Strength of Youth. The Power of Community" reflects the very essence of the Positive Youth Development movement. "The Strength of Youth" evokes images of youth as strong and capable regardless of socio-economic status or troubled history; of youth as resources and partners in building something new in our world. It recalls that youth possess almost boundless energy, passion and creativity; that increasingly youth have a global sense of identity and care about what happens to them and around them and are willing to engage in meaningful solutions to the problems their communities face. "Community" can be defined in many ways; geographically as in a neighborhood or city, people with shared beliefs or nations with common history - the "international community" for example. TNOYS defines community as a sense of kinship - youth care professionals, agencies, networks, and government united with youth and committed to supporting them in developing confidence and competence, a sense of usefulness and belonging and empowered to achieve their potential. "The Power of Community" focuses on providing resources and supports for youth to identify and connect to their capacities, reserves, and resilience and leverage them towards attaining the goals they have set for themselves. And, in particular, the Power of Community reflects Archimedes' famous quote, "Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth." Communities provide a place for youth to stand, to fulfill their limitless promise and potential for moving the Earth.
Who Should Attend
Youth workers, administrators, program managers, board members, young people, social workers, juvenile probation officers, counselors, educators, volunteers, and concerned citizens have much to gain by attending this conference.

Conference Festivities
This year's festivities are special indeed. Our 26th Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony will be held Wednesday evening, August 19, from 5-7 p.m. Included in this event are our Annual Auction "Fun-raiser" and a New Members Welcome Reception complete with heavy hors d'oeuvres and cash bar.
Thursday evening we will celebrate PEAKS 25th Anniversary with a buffet dinner, dance and raffle. The evening features a fajita buffet dinner, music and dancing, great networking, and a raffle of some very special items including two sets of two tickets to anywhere in the continental US that Southwest Airlines flies and an original glass artwork project created by TNOYS' own diyYouth Art Project students from Akins High School in Austin.
This annual tradition helps raise funds to support TNOYS' efforts to serve youthwork professionals. If our training and support services and our advocacy work with the Texas Legislature and state and federal agencies have been helpful to your organization, then the auction and raffle are great ways for you to show your support for TNOYS and youth services in Texas!
To make the Auction a success and keep with tradition, TNOYS members are asked to help our fundraising efforts by bringing donated items for the silent auction. Thanks to donations from member agencies and local businesses, the Auction has items for everyone and a range of bidding prices. Items typically include crafts, jewelry, gift certificates, clothing, autographed items, books, toys, food treats, gift baskets, and unique and imaginative creations! A sample request letter to help you in soliciting donations and a donation form are available by clicking the links below. Please bring the completed form to the auction or submit the donation form, in advance, to Marla Miller at mmiller@tnoys.org by August 17, 2009. For more information on the auction contact Marla Miller at (512) 328-6860 or email mmiller@tnoys.org.
